What type of bike tire choose?

Bike tires play a crucial role in the comfort, performance and safety of the cyclist. They offer optimal adhesion on different surfaces, influencing stability and handling. The various types of tires include:

  • Road tires: offer low rolling resistance for maximum speed on paved roads.
  • ATV tires: designed for increased grip on the trails, with various profiles for different terrains.
  • Hybrid tires: combination of road and mountain tyre characteristics for versatile use.
  • City bike tires: durable and designed for urban use, with grip on various surfaces.

The characteristics of the tires, such as the size, the profile of the crampons and the pressure, affect the behaviour of the bike. Choose tires based on your driving style and the terrain you explore.

Choosing the right tires for your bike is essential for an optimal cycling experience. In this guide, we will help you understand the key aspects to consider when buying bicycle tires, focusing on the types of tires, the dimensions and characteristics specific to your practice.

Types of Tire

Cycling tires can be classified into several categories depending on their main use:

Road tires: If you plan to do mainly cycling on the road, opt for road tires. They are designed for low rolling resistance and are available in a range of widths. Smooth tires such as the Michelin Dynamic Sport tire are ideal for sporting use, while tight tires such as Dutch Perfect or Schwalbe Durano are better suited for urban use.

Gravel tires: If you're a lover of increments or unpilled runways, consider engravl tires. They are wider and offer a better grip on various terrains. The Michelin Power Gravel tire in 40 mm is an excellent versatile choice for the burner.

ATV tyres: For the ATV, you have the choice between three tire diameters: 26 inches, 27.5 inches and 29 inches. The ATV tires have large cramps for optimum traction. The Schwalbe Smart Sam Plus tires in 29 inches and 27.5 inches are excellent options.

VAE tires: If you have an electric assist bike (VAE), opt for tires with more anti-repair reinforcement due to the weight of the bike. The Schwalbe Marathon E Plus tires are suitable for classic VAE.

Tire dimensions

The tyre sizes are indicated in inches or millimeters (mm). Road bike tires generally have a diameter of about 28 inches or 700 mm, with a section of 23 to 28 mm. For mountain bikes, you have the choice between 26, 27.5 and 29 inches, depending on your preference and the type of terrain you will face.

Make sure to check the compatibility of the size of the tires with your bike frame, especially if you plan to mount larger tires.

Tire assembly

With regard to tyre mounting, there are three main options:

Tubeless tyres: This type of installation is made without air chamber with specific rims. Tubeless tires offer better pedal comfort and reduce the risk of puncture.

Tubetype tyres: This is the classic installation with an air room. Make sure you choose the right air room compatible with your tires.

Tubeless Ready tyres: These tires offer versatility because they can be mounted either in tubetype or tubeless, using preventive fluid to calibrate the assembly.

The choice of bike tires will depend mainly on your cycling style and the terrain you plan to travel. Be sure to consider the dimensions, type of tire and the fitting for an optimal cycling experience. If you have any doubts, don't hesitate to ask for a professional opinion in a bike shop to find the tires that best suit your needs. Enjoy your safe cycling with the right tires!
